Short Biography

I received my BEng in Materials Science and Engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology in 2008. I was then awarded an Erasmus Mundus scholarship by the European Commission to carry out my postgraduate studies in advanced materials science (FAME Master Programme). After finishing my first MEng at Grenoble Institute of Technology in France, I did an internship in the Powder Technology Laboratory at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. The project involved manufacturing of transparent ceramics. I then moved to Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany to obtain my second MEng (German Dipl.-Ing). Shortly afterwards, I joined Prof Valeria Nicolosi's group in the Department of Materials at University of Oxford and worked on functionalisation of inorganic MoSI nanowires with gold nanoparticles. In 2010, I was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship to do my DPhil on the Development of an aerosol-CVD technique for the production of carbon nanotubes with integrated online control in Prof Nicole Grobert's group. By developing a patent-pending technology, I stablish a methodology for understanding the dynamic chemistry of the atmosphere of high-temperature reactors and successfully scaled up the production of few-mm thick large-area (ca.100 cm2) carpets of MWCNTs. Since September 2013 I am a senior postdoctoral researcher in the Nanomaterials by Design research group.

In January 2018, Shayan joined Faradion as a Senior Scientist. His research is focused on developing advanced materials for Sodium-ion Batteries.

Research Summary

I specialise in the tailored production and processing of advanced functional materials and development of their emerging technologies. As a former European Commission Erasmus Mundus Scholar and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow, I have studied, researched and taught various topics in physical and engineering science at five different universities in five different countries. My research interests and expertise include:

  a) Materials Engineering: Developing Nanomaterials Solutions for:
  • Energy storage (e.g. Lithium–air batteries, Formula E batteries, etc.)
  • Thermal management of multifunctional nanocomposites and composite laminates
  • Engineering fluids (e.g. coolants) with tailored thermal and electrical properties
  • Thermal management in electromotors and engines
  • Additive manufacturing (3D printing)
  • Optical functionalities in ceramics

  b) Analytical Science: Advanced multi-scale characterisation of materials (from atomic/nano scales to macroscopic scales)

  c) Chemical Engineering: Design, in situ diagnostics and upscaling of reactors for production of advanced functional materials
