I am working on the development of a novel, bio-mimetic ceramic matrix composite (CMC) reinforced with carbon nanotubes. Ceramics possess extremely high stiffness and strength however they are also very brittle. Carbon nanotubes, due to their low density, amazing strength, and high aspect ratio, would make the perfect reinforcement material. The ceramics that I am investigating as potential matrix materials are Alumina and Silicon Carbide. The project will involve the infiltration of CNTs into the ceramic scaffolds by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or aerosol assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD); sintering; characterization, primarily by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectrometry, and BET analysis; and mechanical testing.
