Bio

My aim is to have a career that has engineering at its Prima Donna. I am Arunvinay Prabakaran born and brought up in Chennai (previously Madras) in the southern part of India. I did my schooling in Chennai at PSBB, K.K.Nagar and DAV, Gopalapuram. My father is the founder and chairman of a die-casting plant. His motivation and encouragement inspired me to take up Metallurgical Engineering for my bachelors. I pursued my bachelors in PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. In college I excelled in academics, took up leadership roles and engaged myself in a large number of extra-curricular activities. I also underwent training in a number industries including SAIL Rourkela Steel plant and TVS Motors Pvt Ltd, Hosur. The research exposure that I gained in college motivated to apply to University to Oxford to pursue my DPhil in Material Science. I hope to contribute significantly to the field of Material Science.

  • KOORATHALWAR AWARD (Best Outgoing Student of BE Batch 2011) for excellence in academics, extra-curricular activities, leadership qualities and commitment to society
  • Conferred Best UG project award for Final project work on “Synthesis, characterization of Ni- and Cu- CeO2 nanocomposites by pulsed electro-deposition”.
  • Won medals and prizes in various Cricket tournaments during bachelors.

Project

I will be working on “Novel Inorganic Chalcogenides Production and Application”.

Past Research Experience

My research projects include “Diffusion Bonding of Ti-6Al-4V with Inconel 718” under J.Krishnamoorthy, Sr. Lecturer, PSG Tech. The work investigated the bonding between two dissimilar materials and to achieve minimum distortion with good bond strength comparable with the base material. On successful completion, I presented a paper at COMPOSIT’10, a National Level Technical Symposium at IIT Kharagpur. As a part of summer internship, I worked on “Oxidation Behavior of Nanostructured Ferritic Oxide Dispersed Strengthening (nF -ODS) Alloy” under the guidance of Prof. B .S. Murty, Dept of MME, IITM. The objective of the work was to examine the high temperature (>800oC) oxidation behavior of ODS alloy using Thermogravimetry analyzer (TGA). During the project I gained hands–on experience on a number of equipments including Netzsch STA409 PC DSC/TGA, Dr.SINTER - SPS, X'pert Pro PANalytical – XRD and Fritch P-5 High Energy Planetary Ball Mills. This work is in pipeline to be published shortly. Subsequently, I worked on “Corrosion studies of aluminum metal matrix composites” under Prof. Dr.R.Subramanian at PSG Tech. Potentiometric studies of aluminium metal matrix composites to analyse their corrosion behavior to enable their usage in harsh environments. It exposed me to the field of corrosion engineering which I found appealing. The field of Nanotechnology fascinated me, I choose “Synthesis, Characterization of Ni- and Cu-CeO2 nanocomposites by pulsed electrodeposition” as my final project under Dr.P.C.Angelo, Director, Metal Testing and Research Centre, PSG Tech. The aim of the work is to optimize the conditions for the deposition of Ni and Ce-CeO2 nanocomposites and characterize their novel properties. The project was conferred the “Best Project Award” in Metallurgical Engineering.
